Last Thursday, our Katie Checksfield joined Pippa Birch at the Institute of Asphalt Technology Conference 2025 – her first industry conference!

Katie found it both an insightful and thought-provoking day, with her highlights including:

🌟Pippa’s session on “How NOT to win a Highways Maintenance Contract”. Pippa offered valuable insight into the work that goes on ‘behind the scenes’ to build a compelling tender, tips for nailing the bidding process, and the key Pipster principles of “So What?” and “Check, Check and Check Again”. She finished on an important note – reminding the audience to engage with the next generation as the future of our industry depends on it!

🌟Herbert Micaleff’s session on “Building Better Roads Together: Collaborative Asphalt Specifications for Success” provided two key messages:

✅ Don’t force ‘best practice’ when it’s outside of your capabilities or assets

✅ Collaboration and understanding of local capabilities is key to successful delivery

🌟 Minerals Matter STEM Ambassador Ian Cross’s session focussed on the importance of cross-sector advocacy for supporting future skills, inclusion, and diversity in the Minerals Industry. Ian noted the critical work volunteers do in equipping teachers with first-hand knowledge on career opportunities to ensure young people are exposed to these roles at the earliest opportunity.

🌟 IAT President Dr Helen Bailey’s session on “The 3 C’s”:

Community – Strengthening the network and support system

Curiosity – Encouraging innovation and lifelong learning

Collaboration – Building stronger industry and cross-sector partnerships.

A big thank you to the IAT team, speakers, and fellow attendees for an inspiring and engaging day!
